I think the problem of React is because it is superhyped at the moment... Just like what ML-related academic fields and industry is showing, it seems that React is becoming something like a giant language. As you mentioned in the article, one doesn't really need to care about algorithms, data structures, design pattern, or even JS! What you have to do is just following that damned bunch of API rules React provides... and hardly anyone reckons what is working under the hood? I assume this makes what React users non-comparative for other SW jobs, unless they have strong background in CS.
